Obesity and chronic diseases – such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke – are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems in Nebraska. A healthy lifestyle, one inclusive of healthy eating and physical activity, can help prevent overweight, obesity, and chronic disease, or even alleviate symptoms of those conditions. Obesity prevention can even start early in life through breastfeeding of new born babies. By adapting policies, systems, and environments in key settings like worksites, schools, early child care facilities, hospitals, and in the overall community – healthy, long lasting behaviors can be developed and sustained.
